Johanna Gurland’s 15-year position as founder and principal of her fundraising consulting firm Gurland Associates is part of a 25-year career in the non-profit world.  She is responsible for a wide range of fundraising services, including fundraising programs directed at foundation, individual, and corporate donors, board recruitment and development, strategic planning, executive coaching, staff training, and program development.  Ms. Gurland’s passion for f
undraising – believing it is the means by which people can participate in things of importance to them and the world they live in – has led her to work with many organizations in the US and abroad. 


An important focus of her work is on helping organizations identify and successfully solicit major donors. Her services include coaching staff and volunteers on conducting solicitation visits, prospect reviews and capital campaigns.  Recently she helped secure a $2 million gift for the National Trust for Scotland – their largest  from an American to date.


Ms. Gurland regularly presents on fundraising topics in the US, and occasionally in the UK and Europe.  A former Senior Fellow of Tufts University’s College of Citizenship and Public Service, she has taught graduate level courses on philanthropy and created special programs for nonprofit CEOs.  


Ms. Gurland has a graduate degree from Columbia University, New York, and an undergraduate degree from Windham College, Vermont.  She did graduate work at the Monterey Institute for International Studies, California, and the University of New Hampshire.  Before opening her fundraising practice in 1991, she was a staff fundraiser for the Currier Gallery of Art, Bradford College and Brooklyn Law School.
